Eyelid Surgery Procedure Outlines
Upper and lower eyelid surgery involve different techniques and address separate concerns. However, the overall outline of the procedures is similar.
- Anesthesia: Usually, all that is needed is a small amount of local anesthesia, although additional IV-administered sedatives can be provided if the patient prefers. Our goal is for you to feel completely comfortable every step of the way.
- Duration: Eyelid surgery usually lasts 30–60 minutes, though every procedure is different and tailored to your specifications. For example, patients often combine upper and lower blepharoplasty to bring about a more complete enhancement of facial features. In these cases, the procedure duration can last 2 hours or more.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery Time
Both lower and upper eyelid surgery have similar recovery timelines. The exact process will vary slightly between patients based on individual factors. However, the following outline can help you form a general plan for your recovery.
- IMMEDIATELY AFTER SURGERY
- 1 WEEK AFTER SURGERY
- 2 TO 3 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY
- 1 MONTH TO 6 WEEKS
- You can return home the same day. Some bruising and swelling usually start to occur immediately after surgery, and cold compresses can be very helpful. It is normal to have some dry eye sensation and sensitivity to light during the first week of surgery.
- Your stitches from your upper lids are removed one week after surgery. You should be able to start reading, watching TV, and doing small activities around the house for longer periods. Most of your swelling and bruising improves by the second week. Patients commonly return to (nonphysical) work at some point after 1 week.
- It is still normal to have some asymmetry between the two lids. You should be able to resume most, if not all, of your routine day-to-day activities. Still, be mindful of your eyelids and take precautions not to injure them.
- Some minor amounts of swelling may still persist, which should improve over the next several months after surgery. The incisions in the eyelids usually heal well but can take time, sometimes up to several months. Your doctor may provide steroid injections or a scar cream to help improve your scars.

Additionally, avoid habits or factors that can further age the delicate eyelid areas. Key elements to avoid include excess sunlight, smoking, and dehydration.
Will eyelid surgery leave scars?
Upper eyelid surgery involves making an incision in the natural crease of your eyelid. Although there will be a scar, the qualified microsurgeons at In Focus can plan and hide the incision to ensure it is all but invisible. Over time, even this scarring will fade.
Lower eyelid surgery incisions are also hidden. Scars will form, but they will be small and underneath the skin. You still need a skilled surgeon here, as imprecise incisions can heal poorly.
