Why Choose Eyelid Surgery
Types of Eyelid Surgery
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery (also called upper blepharoplasty) is a form of plastic surgery that restores your eyes to a vibrant, rested look. Upper blepharoplasty is the most common procedure performed in the United States to decrease the effects of age on one’s eyes and face. Your surgeon removes excess skin and tightens the eyelid to create a more youthful expression. The procedure can also improve eyelid symmetry and enhance eye shape.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower blepharoplasty addresses cosmetic concerns under the eye. Mostly, your surgeon can remove fat, smooth out tissues, and reposition the eyelid. Under-eye issues can dramatically influence how youthful and alert the face looks. Careful adjustment of these tissues can restore a more rested yet vibrant look to the eyes and face. This surgical procedure provides exceptionally long-lasting results.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure Outlines
- Anesthesia: Usually, all that is needed is a small amount of local anesthesia, although additional IV-administered sedatives can be provided if the patient prefers. Our goal is for you to feel completely comfortable every step of the way.
- Duration: Eyelid surgery usually lasts 30–60 minutes, though every procedure is different and tailored to your specifications. For example, patients often combine upper and lower blepharoplasty to bring about a more complete enhancement of facial features. In these cases, the procedure duration can last 2 hours or more.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery Time
- IMMEDIATELY AFTER SURGERY
- 1 WEEK AFTER SURGERY
- 2 TO 3 WEEKS AFTER SURGERY
- 1 MONTH TO 6 WEEKS
- You can return home the same day. Some bruising and swelling usually start to occur immediately after surgery, and cold compresses can be very helpful. It is normal to have some dry eye sensation and sensitivity to light during the first week of surgery.
- Your stitches from your upper lids are removed one week after surgery. You should be able to start reading, watching TV, and doing small activities around the house for longer periods. Most of your swelling and bruising improves by the second week. Patients commonly return to (nonphysical) work at some point after 1 week.
- It is still normal to have some asymmetry between the two lids. You should be able to resume most, if not all, of your routine day-to-day activities. Still, be mindful of your eyelids and take precautions not to injure them.
- Some minor amounts of swelling may still persist, which should improve over the next several months after surgery. The incisions in the eyelids usually heal well but can take time, sometimes up to several months. Your doctor may provide steroid injections or a scar cream to help improve your scars.
Which Eyelid Procedure Is Right for Me?
If you are tired of looking tired or aged, then one of our blepharoplasty options could be for you. Even though inside you feel as you always have, your outer appearance may be at odds with this inner you. With eyelid surgery at In Focus, you can restore your outer appearance to match how you feel within.
While there is no age limit to either eyelid procedure, a good candidate should be in good health at the time of surgery. Having overall good health promotes a safer surgery and smoother recovery.

Eyelid Surgery FAQs
Are there nonsurgical alternatives to eyelid surgery?
Other treatments, such as injectables or fillers, can help fight against signs of age. However, blepharoplasty comes with long-lasting results that can truly enhance your natural beauty.
Still, nonsurgical options have their advantages. They have high safety profiles and require minimal commitment. Many younger patients prefer these options as preventative measures against signs of aging.
How long do the results last?
Upper eyelid surgery can provide benefits for 5–7 years for most patients. Individual rates of aging and lifestyle factors can influence this duration. Lower eyelid surgery provides results for well over 10 years for many patients. You can further prolong either procedure’s results with nonsurgical rejuvenation treatments, such as laser therapy.
Additionally, avoid habits or factors that can further age the delicate eyelid areas. Key elements to avoid include excess sunlight, smoking, and dehydration.
Will eyelid surgery leave scars?
Upper eyelid surgery involves making an incision in the natural crease of your eyelid. Although there will be a scar, the qualified microsurgeons at In Focus can plan and hide the incision to ensure it is all but invisible. Over time, even this scarring will fade.
Lower eyelid surgery incisions are also hidden. Scars will form, but they will be small and underneath the skin. You still need a skilled surgeon here, as imprecise incisions can heal poorly. Subdermal scarring still affects your overall look. So minimizing it is crucial for seeing more refined results.
Visible scarring can happen when you work with a surgeon who does not plan the incision appropriately. But with our top-quality surgeons, you can rest assured you are working with a professional who has years of experience and training.
